Attractions

N Bar
The N Bar Ranch was started as a Nebraska cattle ranch that was forced to move north after dry summers and prairie fires in the mid 1880's. They established three different ranches in Montana and controlled the majority of the water supply in south central and into eastern Montana by the time their entire heard was moved here in 1885. The owners were forced to sell the N Bar cattle and brand to a sheep rancher who eventually sold to oil drillers. They then turned the ranch into the internationally known registered cattle operation of over 45,000 acres of land and thousands of cattle. The N Bar is one of the largest ranches in Montana and operates as both a commercial and registered cattle operation.

Bear Gulch Pictographs
25 miles west of Grass Range is the Bear Gulch Pictographs. The pictographs hold a view into the area's past, with paintings from Stone Age Indians. Also in Bear Gulch is an archeological dig in a rock formation that only comes to the earth's surface in 5 places in the world. The rock is 318 million years old and has had both the Smithsonian Institute and the Carnegie Museum digging there for over 25 years.

Petrolia Reservoir & Ackley Lake
Ackley Lake is located 62 miles west of Grass Range and offers boating, fishing and camping facilities from May to September. Also near Grass Range, 33 miles to the east, is Petrolia Reservoir. There are estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,000 head of elk for hunting and viewing and since record keeping began in 1936. Over 200 species of birds have been identified in the CMR. In addition, the CMR holds the Missouri River Breaks. These are deep cuts in the earth's surface that extend out from the river like fingers. They were formed from the melting of the glaciers after they pushed the river 60 miles south then began to retreat. The CMR can only be viewed from the few roads through it, on foot or horse back. It is one of the few places left where nature rules and humans are forced to sit back and watch.
