Petrolia
Reservoir & Ackley Lake
Ackley Lake is located 62 miles west of Grass Range
and offers boating, fishing and camping facilities from May to
September. Also near Grass Range, 33 miles to the east, is Petrolia
Reservoir. Petrolia was originally built solely as an irrigation
dam, but is now used for recreation as well. It also offers fishing,
and limited boating, and camping facilities and is frequented by the
local people throughout the summer.
CMR
National Wildlife Refuge
Located 40 miles north of Grass Range just off Hwy 193,
the Charles M Russell Wildlife Refuge holds many species of wildlife
including, deer, elk, big horn sheep, black bears, mountain lions,
bobcats, coyote, beaver and more. The refuge offers many
opportunities for the outdoors lover such as seasonal hunting,
hiking, camping, boating, fishing and bird watching. There are
estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,000 head of elk for hunting and
viewing and since record keeping began in 1936. Over 200 species of
birds have been identified in the CMR. In addition, the CMR holds
the Missouri River Breaks. These are deep cuts in the earth's
surface that extend out from the river like fingers. They were
formed from the melting of the glaciers after they pushed the river
60 miles south then began to retreat. The CMR can only be viewed
from the few roads through it, on foot or horse back. It is one of
the few places left where nature rules and humans are forced to sit
back and watch.
